Né le 22 juillet 1982, Tom Van Avermaet a toujours poursuivi comme seul et unique but celui de devenir un conteur d’histoire. Fasciné par le monde de rêves en carton-pâte que procure le cinéma, Tom décida rapidement que le meilleur moyen d’atteindre son but était de se lancer lui-même dans la réalisation. Tandis qu’il termine sa dernière année à l’école de cinéma RITS en Belgique, il réalise son premier court métrage ‘DREAMTIME – Droomtijd’ (2006), lequel lui permit d’être diplômé avec mention. Le film connu par la suite un grand succès en festival puisqu’il fut sélectionné dans plus de 60 festivals nationaux et internationaux et gagna de nombreux prix (parmi lesquels une nomination au Méliès d’or du meilleur film fantastique européen).

Au casting de son premier court métrage professionnel ‘DEATH OF A SHADOW – Mort d’une ombre’ (2012)  l’on retrouve Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead, De Rouille et d’os), Laura Verlinden, Peter Van Den Eede et Benjamin Ramon. Le film commença sa circulation en festival en Juin 2012 remportant entre autres une nomination aux European Film Awards 2013 ainsi qu’une place au shortlist pour l’Oscars 2013.

Influencé par les  grands « surréalistes » du cinéma international (Guillermo Del Toro, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick, Raoul Servais…) et inspiré par la mythologie, les contes fantastiques et les bandes dessinées, Tom espère faire vivre sa passion pour le fantastique au travers de futurs projets aussi bien de fiction –long ou court, de vidéoclips ou de publicités.
